Kerry Washington is famously private when it comes to her personal life but recently spoke about live Tweeting during one of the most personal moments a woman can have, during labor.
Washington engages with her fans through Tweets every week during her ABC hit show Scandal. In a move that could be taken out of character Olivia Pope’s playbook, Washington decided she’s have to come up with a way to keep her labor private in much the same way she had kept her pregnancy. In an interview with The EDIT Washington said, “Every Thursday within three weeks of my [daughter’s] due date, I loaded up pre-tweets based on the episodes and what I would want to say. I tweeted in the very early stages of my labor,” adding, “I figured that if I went completely silent on social media, then people would know I was in the hospital!”
Washington gave birth last April to her first child with her husband, former NFL player Nnamdi Asomugha. Despite being the star of a top rated show, Washington has managed to keep her personal life out of the tabloids living a relatively private life. The birth of her daughter was even kept secret prompting co-star Bellamy Young to declare she was not allowed to talk about Washington or her daughter at an Emmy red carpet event last year.
There was no Hollywood announcement after the birth. Instead Washington Tweeted a message on Mother’s Day that read,”Well…I still won’t talk about my personal life on here But…I see your tweets. And I am filled with gratitude! XO #HappyMothersDay.”
Live Tweeting during labor to throw off the media and fans about her impending birth sounds as if it could be taken out of a Shonda Rhimes script but it was all Washington in real life.
